Underglaze Transfer Step by step
Underglaze transfer sheets are a fantastic tool for adding intricate designs or detailed artwork to ceramics. They consist of a special paper that is pre-coated with
underglaze or transfer ink, which can be applied to pottery with heat and
water. Here are some simple steps on how to use them:
Materials
Needed:
Underglaze transfer sheets (available in different patterns and colors)
Ceramic pieces (bisque ware)
A small sponge or brush
Water
A cloth or paper towel
Optional:
Clear glaze (for final finish)
Simple
Steps:
Prepare the Ceramic Piece: Start with bisque-fired pottery. It should be clean and free of dust. If needed, use a damp cloth to wipe off any debris.
Cut Out the Design: Choose the part of the underglaze transfer sheet that you want to use. Carefully cut out the design, leaving a little margin around the edges to make handling easier.
Position the Design: Place the transfer sheet face
down on the surface of the pottery where you want the design to appear.
Make sure it’s aligned and in the position you desire.
Apply Water: Using a damp sponge or brush,
gently wet the back of the transfer paper. The water activates the
transfer, allowing it to release the design onto the pottery. Avoid
over-wetting, as this can cause the paper to tear.
Transfer the Design: After moistening, apply even
pressure to the back of the transfer paper. You can use a soft, damp
sponge or your fingers to gently rub over the paper, ensuring the design
is fully transferred onto the surface of the pottery.
Peel Off the Paper: Slowly and carefully peel away
the transfer paper from the pottery. The design should be left on the
ceramic piece. If some parts didn’t transfer well, you can repeat the
process or touch up with a fine brush.
Allow to Dry: Let the piece dry thoroughly
before any further handling. You may need to let it dry completely before
applying any glaze.
Optional - Apply Clear Glaze: Once the design is dry, you can
apply a clear glaze to the ceramic piece. (cone 04 – 06) This will help
seal the underglaze and give the piece a glossy finish. Be sure to follow
the specific firing instructions for your glaze.
Firing: Fire the ceramic piece in a
kiln according to the glaze or underglaze firing temperature. This will
ensure the design is permanently set and vibrant.
